As is the case with most professions in the medial realm, a certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) must have some training. This training typically consists of attending a post-secondary institution for a period of two years. During that time the individual will learn how to accurately transcribe medical information including instruction on basic anatomy, learning proper grammar and punctuation techniques, as well as detailed training on medical terminology.

In order to be considered a CMT, it's necessary to be given that designation by the American Association for Medical Transcription. This consists of the transcriptionist taking a test and achieving a passing grade. Those interested in this field of study should be aware that recertification is required every three years and in order to qualify for recertification, some additional schooling is required. Once a person has achieved CMT status, they can then seek out employment. Because the bulk of the work that a transcriptionist does is related to listening to taped recordings, this job can usually be done from just about anywhere. Many people who are active in this profession actually own their own transcribing businesses and service several clients. Clients typically are medical doctors, dentists, chiropractors and specialists. The CMT is given the material on tape that includes sensitive patient information and then they must transcribe it into the format requested by their client. There are still many jobs for transcriptionists within the offices of doctors as well as in hospital settings. Many people find it more productive to be in a typical office environment and for them a salaried position is preferable. The earnings that a CMT can expect to make are promising. On average, someone entering the workforce after completing the educational requirements of this position can expect to make $14 per hour. Obviously someone working from home can strive to work more hours and take on more clients which will ultimately result in a higher earning potential. With the limited educational requirements and the lucrative earning potential, this is a great job for anyone to pursue. There is no age restriction on someone entering this profession so even if you've held a different job for years, with just two years of schooling, you can be on track to a wonderful new career.
