Health Information Technology Salary

How much is information worth? If you go by the health information technology salary, quite a lot. With the health care system so dependent on information, it's no wonder the health information technician job is in high demand and employers are willing to pay to get the job done.

A patient's medical record must be up-to-date at all times. That means beyond the basic information, it should contain all medical consultations, diagnosis, treatments and procedures, lab tests, medications, referrals and confinements. In short, the patient's medical history down to the last blood test and x-ray.

It is by no means an easy task to keep track of this for hundreds of patients because the information is essential for medical purposes and just as vital for insurance and billing purposes. But someone has to do it.

The role of the health information technician

With the federal legislation requiring all medical information to be properly organized, filed and maintained, a health information technician is a necessary component of the health care system. It's not just compiling and maintaining the information but making sure they conform to medical, administrative, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements.

Your primary task is to assemble and analyze patient information with the end in view of improving health care and cutting financial costs. Someone with a strong medical coding background is an ideal candidate for the job and will definitely help boost your health information technology salary.

Aside from the patient's medical charts, it is part of your responsibility to ensure that all patient forms are properly filled out, identified and signed. Once all these documents are available, the data contained in them will be entered into a computer and processed.

The technician salary

Presently, the entry level salary for the position is a low $23,993 to a high of $39,123 for less than a year of experience. And becoming a registered health information technician (RHIT) is a one way to boost your wages. That's because the emerging trend among employers is to choose the candidate with credentials over those who don't.

Depending on your location, workplace and experience, you can expect a salary range of $10.89 to $14.67 per hour.

The top five areas where health information technician jobs are popular are: Flagstaff, Arizona; Rome, Georgia; Great Falls, Montana; St. Joseph, Missouri and Yakima, Washington.

In one state, the health information technology salary still varies by metropolitan area. In Texas alone, the lowest salary is pegged at $19,920 in Laredo, while Dallas pays its technicians the highest at $34,820. San Jose in California offers wages of $45,280, while in Visalia, the salary is at $28,450.

Employment opportunities in the health information management technology field are rising, with more offices and organizations requiring the services of a health information technician. So you have a choice of working in small offices like doctor's clinics or outpatient care centers or go with big workplaces like home health care services, hospitals and nursing or residential care facilities or health maintenance organizations.  Wherever you end up serving, your health information technology salary may be higher or lower based on your duties and responsibilities.

The good news about this profession is the opportunity for advancement. If you have the management skills to match your technical expertise, you may eventually want to get further education through health information technology schools to become a health information manager. Someone's got to run the show and you could be it. With a better position, you can definitely expect to improve your health information technology salary.
