Of 20 medical assistant schools in Michigan, the Alpeno Community College offers a two-year associate in applied science degree for medical assisting. It is a two-year program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). During the summer, students go through a practicum to familiarize themselves with the administrative responsibilities of a medical assistant and includes coding and insurance billing. Part of the second semester is spent on clinical internship where both administrative and clinical duties are performed by students for evaluation. Baker College has several campuses around the state where medical assistant training is offered. After completing the program in two years, graduates are awarded an associate in applied science degree and qualify to take the certification exam that grants credentials of certified medical assistant. Like Alpeno, the program is accredited by CAAHEP. Davenport University’s College of Health Professions offers a diploma program for medical assisting to prepare professionals for entry-level positions. It is four quarters and the last is spent mostly for hands-on training both in clinical and administrative functions. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam.
