In order to practice as a medical technologist, a person must first study towards a bachelor's degree in medical technology. This may seem like a lot of hard work, but it's well worth it when you consider all the benefits of a medical technologist career. In addition to the required classroom time, training within a laboratory environment is critical. Once a person has earned their degree they are then ready to look for a suitable job.

Although many medical technologists accept positions in laboratories, there are other avenues for them to pursue as well, including hospitals and private corporations. The scope of their responsibilities will vary depending on the environment in which they work as well as what their particular employer expects of them.

Years ago, before the advent of much of the computerized testing equipment that is being used today, medical technologists were expected to prepare and analyze all specimens by hand. This meant that they were well-versed in the use of equipment such as microscopes. Although a medical technologist career still involves the use of this type of equipment, there are now many different machines each designed to perform a certain lab task. Therefore a medical technologist needs to understand how each piece of equipment works and the proper handling instructions for each.

Many of the tests that are performed by the technologist involve analyzing blood. This may be to match it for a transfusion, or to test the level of certain drugs in the blood. Many private corporations will hire a technologist to perform random drug tests on the staff, however many clinics and hospitals also routinely order these types of tests on patients to see how effectively they are absorbing medications that have been prescribed to them.

Performing tests to determine the nature of a patient's illness also falls under the realm of responsibility for a person holding this position. They take a sample of blood that has been drawn from a patient and then test it to see if they are stricken with a disease such as leukemia. Although there are sometimes false positives or positive negatives, in every case the technologist is very careful during the testing process to ensure that the sample isn't contaminated. They understand that both the doctor and the patient expect an accurate result.

This is a wonderful and rewarding career choice for both men and women. Many people choose to enter college to pursue this field right after high school while others wait until they've already been working in a medical environment for a few years.
