First, let's lay down the job description of a surgical technician. You are a vital part of the surgical team composed of a surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses. There are five surgical technologist schools offering associate degree programs: Baltimore City Community College, Chesapeake College, Frederick Community College, Montgomery College and The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC).

As in Maryland, California surgical technologists tend to migrate to San Luis Obispo, Modesto and Napa for job opportunities. Employment is even more scarce for this occupation in Salinas, Santa Rosa and Fresno. Highest median surgical technologist salaries are in Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco.
Even when there aren't as many jobs in Fresno, the Fresno City College is among the more popular surgical technologist schools in the state. It offers surgical technology courses that may be completed independently, including clinical practicums. MiraCosta College is only one of four community colleges that offers the Surgical Technologist program leading to an associate degree and there is currently a one-year waiting time for those wanting to enrol in this program.
Other California-based surgical technologist colleges that offer diploma and certificate programs are American Career College, Everest College, High Tech Institute and Western Career College. Illinois: teeming with surgical tech schools
There are 18 community colleges in the state of Illinois that offer surgical technician training programs leading to an associate degree. It may not be the most number, but the number is substantial. Where are opportunities open? In Champaign and Peoria. While the highest paid technicians are in Rockford and Chicago, there aren't as many remaining opportunities there.
