Ultrasound Technician Training

Do you know that ultrasound technician training can open many possibilities for you? It's probably one of the reasons why many, who have been lured to allied medical careers, are choosing this profession over others. To qualify for employment, you don't need to spend four years for education yet still get a decent job that pays well. So what is the lure to become an ultrasound technologist?

Employment opportunities abound

It's one of the most in-demand among allied medical health careers, especially with more people preferring sonography as a means of diagnostic imaging over the x-ray machine, which uses radiation. Developments in technology make this an exciting field but there are specific requirements.

Ultrasound technician training does not stop after you graduate because continuing education is necessary to keep abreast of technology advancements.  Your choices for employment increase when you choose to specialize on a particular part of the body.

Not only is sonography used by obstetricians and ophthalmologists, it is increasingly being used to diagnose other organs. Hospitals will remain the number one employer of ultrasound technicians, but private clinics and diagnostic laboratories will also be scrambling for your services.

Training can upgrade your skills

Even medical professionals such as doctors and nurses with many years of training do not automatically qualify to operate the sonograph. Specialized training is required to handle ultrasound equipment and interpret the images.

However, you have an advantage of you already have related medical training because you can opt for the shorter ultrasound technician training that will result in a certification. In a year or less, you will have upgraded your skills and increased your marketability as a medical professional.

The job pays well

While technician positions in the industry abound and pay well, the ultrasound technician salary is one of the few that has a higher chance of earning more.  Entry-level positions will give you a pay of up to $40,000 annually, which is relatively high compared to other technician salaries that start out between $25,000 and $30,000.

Granted your training was more focused and the skills required are more complex, it still is very rewarding even for a beginner. Depending on your experience and expertise, you can earn upwards of $63,000 and veterans make about $85,000 annually.

You qualify for work quickly

The fastest ultrasound technician training can be completed in two years, without any previous medical background.  Online programs are also made available by a few ultrasound tech schools. Part of the program requires intensive hands-on training to build your confidence both in handling/operating the equipment and dealing with patients who may find it an uncomfortable procedure.  Aside from this, other courses include anatomy, physiology, physics, medical terminology, vascular and other specialized ultrasounds.

If you have related medical training, then you can become a certified ultrasound technician in one year.  There is, however, an option of completing a bachelor's degree in which case the intensive training would mean specialization and higher credentials.

As the population continues to age, and technology further advances in the medical field the need for professionals in the allied health service will continue to grow to serve more clients. This is good news for those wanting to explore the field and who can expect to find fulfillment both in the work and the compensation.

So, is ultrasound technician training for you?
